Abstract:The study analysed 13 raw turmeric samples collected directly from farms across six Indian states. All samples contained lead levels well within the FSSAI permissible limit, suggesting that the high lead levels reported in commercially available turmeric powder are more likely to arise during post-harvest processing, handling, or adulteration rather than cultivation.

The findings raise important concerns regarding food safety, supply-chain traceability, and the need for stronger monitoring of turmeric and spices at the processing, packaging, wholesale and retail stages.
