Title: Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) in Vegetables
Publication Type: Research Reports
Year of Publication: 2024
Abstract: The report, “Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) in Vegetables: A Monitoring Study,” conducted by Toxics Link, examines the presence of highly hazardous pesticide (HHP) residues in commonly consumed vegetables in India. The report highlights the adverse health and environmental effects of HHPs, such as endocrine disruption, cancer risks, and neurological damage. Sampling was carried out across New Delhi, Odisha, and Maharashtra, analyzing residues of seven targeted HHPs, including monocrotophos and carbendazim. Results revealed that most samples fell below detection limits, indicating relative safety but underscoring the persistence of HHP usage despite regulatory restrictions. The study emphasizes the need for sustainable farming practices, policy updates, and ongoing monitoring programs to mitigate HHP risks. Recommendations include promoting integrated pest management, alternative pesticides, and stricter compliance to international standards to safeguard public health and ecosystems.
