SAICM

SAICM (Strategic Approach to Chemical Management) is a global policy and strategy adopted by the Governments and stakeholders in the first International Chemical Conference on Chemical Management (ICCM-1), held in Dubai, February 2006. Though SAICM is not legally binding treaty, however constitute a global political commitment on the part of governments and other stakeholders that recognizes the health and environmental harm caused by chemical exposure and that pledges effective action to reform how chemicals are produced and used in order to minimize those harms.

Objectives of SAICM

The overall objective of SAICM is to “Achieve the Sound Management of Chemicals throughout their life -cycle so that, by 2020, chemicals are used and produced in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and environment.

Scope:-

The SAICM has a scope that includes: a. Environment, economic, social, health and labor aspects of the chemical safety b. Agricultural and Industrial chemicals with a view to promoting sustainable development and covering chemicals at all stages of their life-cycle, including products. c. It should take due account of instruments and processes that have been developed to date and be flexible enough to deal with new ones without duplicating efforts, in particular the efforts of forums dealing with without duplicating efforts, in particular the efforts of forums dealing with the military use of chemicals.
