ELECTRICITY FROM WASTE

Will the Minister of NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is aware of the difficulties being faced by small units, operating for making electricity from waste, in West Bengal;
(b) if so, whether the Government would consider inviting the heads of these units for taking information related to the functioning of such units and setting up a system to ensure that
these units can run with full capacity after resolving the difficulties; and
(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c) The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing Waste to Energy (WTE) Programme which, inter alia, supports setting up of plants for generation of electricity from urban, industrial and agricultural waste. Under the Programme, Central Financial Assistance is provided for setting up of such projects in the country. In general, small units engaged in generating electricity from waste may face operational difficulties due to irregular supply of requisite quantity of feedstock, supply of quality of feedstock compatible with selected technology, improper maintenance, etc.
Government takes all appropriate steps to address issues of renewable energy sector. Further, the Ministry has established Eight Biogas Development and Training Centers (BDTCs) at India’s premier Institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University, Bhubaneswar, etc. These centers, inter alia, provide training & skill development as well as technical assistance in installing, operating & maintaining such plants.
