Abstract:India has regulations related to municipal waste, hazardous waste and even battery waste management but sadly none addresses the proper management and recycling of small or dry cell batteries.Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 and 2010 Amendment deal with lead acid batteries (wet) and are not applicable to the dry cell batteries.Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 mentions ‘used batteries’ as ‘domestic hazardous waste’ clubbed with paint, pesticide containers, CFL lights,expired medicines, broken mercury instruments and used bio-medical waste generated at the household level. It does not specifically mention about their segregated disposal, treatment or resource recovery
