Assam has, in recent past, stressed on the growth of Information technology in the state. Bringing in IT policy and setting up of software parks are resulting in increased usage of IT equipments in the state. There has been also major growth in the use of household electronics. With the life span of electronics getting shorter, this growth is resulting in increase in generation of E-waste in the state. The import of low quality electronics from neighboring countries also adds to this.
Unfortunately, there has been very little action on the issue in the state. At present, there is hardly any recycling infrastructure in the entire north eastern states to handle any kind of e-waste. With little awareness and large usage of electronics, this toxic waste issue has the potential to damage the fragile environment of this region. Hence, it is important that we start discussing the concerns of the state and find solutions for effective e-waste management.
In the above context, Toxics Link feels the need to facilitate discussions and information exchange on E-waste rules and its implementation among the key stakeholders. We will be happy to organize the workshop in partnership with Assam Pollution Control Board which will address some of these concerns and find a way ahead. The workshop will aim to get together the various stakeholders for charting out proper and effective roadmap for future action for the State of Assam.
