Subject: ASBESTOS FACTORIES


Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state:-


(a) whether Government has recently conducted a study through the National Institute of Occupational Health to assess the extent of betterment in the working conditions in the Asbestos factories all over the country;

(b) if so, a summary of the findings of the study;

(c) whether the asbestos industry in the private sector had contributed funds for the conduct of the study in addition to the allocation made by Government; and

(d) whether Government is likely to present this report, finalized in consultation with asbestos industry, at the Chemical Review Committee of the UN at Rotterdam in March, 2008 to rationalize its third veto against UN sanctions on asbestos industry?

Subject: IMPLEMENTATION OF FOREST RIGHT ACT


Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state:-

(a) whether Government has decided to give land rights to tribal and forest dwellers which will be applicable from January 1, 2008;

(b) if so, whether the Forest Right Act rules, which were to be notified in October were held back;

(c) if so, the reasons therefore;

(d) whether all State Governments have considered and agreed to implement the Act seriously;

(e) if so, how many States have so far done it; and

(f) by when all States will be implementing this Act?

Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state:-


(a) the details of rivers in the country which are highly polluted, State-wise;

(b) the total financial assistance provided by Central Government to State Governments for cleaning of the rivers during the last three years, State-wise, and year-wise;

(c) the details of rivers in the country in which the various types of aquatic lives are now extinct; and

(d) the steps taken to bring these rivers back to life again? ANSWER

Subject: ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS OF MINING .


Will the Minister of MINES be pleased to state:-


(a) how many mining units were stopped from operation at the instance of Courts taking into account the environmental hazards around mining industry and the number of workers affected; and

(b) what are the safeguards ensured in this context to get over the environmental issues on the one side and to approach the court to modify its orders on the other in the larger interest of mining industry and the workers?
