Subject: COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED VEGETABLES


Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state :-

(a) whether the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee has given green signal to the commercial production of the genetically modified vegetables in the country;

(b) if so, the details in this regard;

(c) whether some important Brinjal cultivating States have registered their opposition for cultivation of Bt. Brinjal;

(d) if so, the details in this regard; and

(e) the details of the action taken by Government thereon?

Subject: MERCURY POLLUTION


Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY Welfare be pleased to state:-


(a) whether mercury poses serious threat to medicos` health;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the existing waste management system for mercury in the country;

(c) whether the All India Institute of Medical Sciences had conducted any survey to assess the awareness about environmental mercury pollution in the health care system;

(d) if so, the outcome thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Union Government to minimize the use of mercury especially in hospitals and to generate the said awareness among the people?

DISEASES DUE TO BIO CHEMICALS WASTE
Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:-

(a) whether there is always a threat of spread of several diseases due to the biochemical waste generated by various hospitals in Delhi and the country;

(b) if so, whether the Union Government has formulated any scheme to dispose of biochemical waste generated by various hospitals;

(c) if so, the amount allocated to the State Governments under this scheme alongwith the details thereof; and

(d) the names of the State Governments which have taken measures to disposed off biochemical waste generated by the hospitals so far?

Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state:-

(a) whether radioactive steel scrap is being imported in the country which is subsequently used as manufacturing packaging material for heavy duty engineering goods consignments;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether his Ministry has taken up the case with the Ministry of Shipping and Ministry of Commerce to equip the ports to detect radioactive or contaminated consignments coming into or leaving Indian territory;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

Subject: DISPOSAL OF MEDICAL WASTES .


Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state :-

(a) whether Government has issued directives that all medical institutions must have invertors, autocloves or microwaves to destroy infectious and hazardous wastes in scientific manner;

(b) whether it is a fact that a deadline was set for the hospitals to acquire such equipments by 2002;

(c) whether it is a fact that 85 percent of hospitals and medical institutions have breached and ignored this deadline with cooperation of authorities; and;

(d) if so, what action would be taken to enquire into such violations and set a time-bound target for its re-implementation?
