Delhi’s garbage problem is a nightmare for its denizens and the government agencies alike. Since 1950, over 12 large waste dump sites in the city have been totally packed with all sorts of wastes including toxic waste. Where does Delhi’s garbage go?
Experts predict that landfills would soon overflow with waste, going by the rate at which they are being filled. The Delhi government’s proposal to tun the Bhatti mine area, part of the Delhi Ridge and a watershed area, INTO a municipal landfill is not a ‘solution’ and has been severely criticised. This underlines TL’s role in building new city platforms where people can come together, and engage in debates about land use and other issues that concern them. |
