With climate change concerns, nuclear energy is now being brought back and reconsidered as 'clean' and 'zero cost' energy. The amount of waste created will increase manifold.

One –third of the healthcare facilities in Uttarakhand are not registered. They are also running out of compliance with regard to biomedical waste management and handling rules, 1998. Responding to the need of streamlining efforts towards a better management of biomedical waste in the healthcare sector, Toxics Link, A Voluntary organization based in New Delhi, organized a “Regional Workshop on Initiatives Towards Making Health Care Toxics Free” at Hotel Pacific in Dehradun on 25 Nov 2009.

Due to reasons known only to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, a recycling plant, barely a year old based out of Rajpur Industrial Area in Roorkie, under the name of M/s Attero Pvt Ltd, has been given permission for import of 8000 MT of hazardous E-waste from UK and USA. Now the over 10 to 15 recyclers who have recently started operating in India, all of them with hardly any installed capacity, are trying to get import permissions based on this clearance

5th March 2009, New Delhi: According to the CPCB annual report more than 50% of the medical waste in the country is left untreated every day and this accounts to approximately 18MT of contaminated infectious medical waste open to the common man. Flouting industry and erring hospitals apart, even the government departments are not serious. Out of the states surveyed by the Comptroller and Auditor General only 46% of the states were monitoring the implementation of Bio- medical waste management (CAG Report 2007).

More than 140 countries decided to pursue a global treaty on mercury at the 25th UNEP Governing Council meeting. Defying expectations, world environmental ministers agreed last week in Nairobi to begin negotiating a treaty to control global mercury pollution. The decision noted the urgent need for international action due to "the serious adverse effects of mercury on human health and the environment." Negotiations will start later this year.
