The two billion year old Delhi Ridge Forest is one of the country’s and
Delhi’s oldest natural heritage. It is protected :

In The Master Plan MPD 2001, ‘The ridge is defined as the rocky outcrop of the Aravalli range.
It is to be maintained in its pristine glory with no infringements permitted.’

The Central Ground Water Board has declared it as notified or protected area
for water recharge.

It is protected as a reserved forest under section IV of the Indian Forest
Act 1927 in May 1994. And no non-forest activity allowed according to the Environment
Protection and Control Committee (EPCA) and the Centrally Empowered Committee
(CEC)

In 1996 Geographical survey of India (GSI) identified the whole 640 hectares
of Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and Mahipalpur ridge as part of Delhi ridge.
Later on Forest department and Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) identified
this area as forest and water recharging area respectively. The report of
the GSI clearly states that the area in question is Aravali ridge. And hence
also protected by the 1994 Aravali Fragile Area Notification.

In 2004 Delhi High Court took a serious view of the abuse of the protected
status of Central Ridge and directed the DDA to ensure that ''the ridge is
maintained as ridge only.''
