Plastic bottles escape pollution laws

Hyderabad, August 13, 2012: While bottles of mineral water are increasingly becoming a major cause of pollution, not much is being done about it. A reason for this is that the entire focus of Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011, is on polythene bags and their thickness and that the rules to ensure the responsibility of disposal is on the manufacturer. Nobody cares to know where tons of plastic bottles containing water or other beverages, thrown carelessly after consumption, are being dumped. Even the authorities are conveniently passing the buck saying it is not covered under the amended rules.

Agrochemicals responsible for uranium in water: PU experts

Faridkot, July 15, 2012: In view of reports of high uranium concentration in groundwater in Punjab and it leading to multiple heath hazards, a team of 12 senior teachers from physics, chemistry and geology departments of the Panjab University has blamed the agrochemical process in the state for the problem.

New Delhi, July 12, 2012: Terming the Municipal Corporation of Delhi “the biggest polluter” of the Yamuna, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rebuked the civic body for saying that it has nothing to do with the pollution of the river and warned it that all its three Commissioners will have to appear before the court if it persists with its stand.
