NTPC world's 6th-largest CO2 emitter: Survey

New Delhi, August 13, 2012: India’s state-owned NTPC Ltd is the world’s sixth-largest polluter among a total of 40 large power generating companies, according to the Centre for Global Development (CGD), a Washington-based think tank. Also, NTPC has moved up the list of highest carbon dioxide (CO2)-emitting companies globally from seventh position in 2004 to sixth now.

SC seeks toxicity report of Bhopal groundwater

New Delhi, August 14, 2012: The first-ever official test to find out toxicity level in groundwater around Bhopal's Union Carbide plant since the leak of poisonous gas in 1984 will be soon conducted with the Supreme Court on Monday issuing notice to Lucknow-based Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) asking it why it had not done the test yet despite being told to do so.

Plastic bottles escape pollution laws

Hyderabad, August 13, 2012: While bottles of mineral water are increasingly becoming a major cause of pollution, not much is being done about it. A reason for this is that the entire focus of Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011, is on polythene bags and their thickness and that the rules to ensure the responsibility of disposal is on the manufacturer. Nobody cares to know where tons of plastic bottles containing water or other beverages, thrown carelessly after consumption, are being dumped. Even the authorities are conveniently passing the buck saying it is not covered under the amended rules.

In Delhi, waste generates power — and debate

New Delhi, August 12, 2012: By the end of this year, Delhi will have its second waste-to-energy plant generating electricity at the landfill near Ghazipur. A similar plant, Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy plant, sited in the vicinity of a residential colony and a hospital, has started generation since the beginning of this year.

Kochi, August 12, 2012: The Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited, which runs a Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF) at Ambalamedu, has submitted a detailed project report to the State government and the State Pollution Control Board seeking approval to set up an incinerator for the treatment and disposal of biomedical waste.

India the new graveyard of toxic ships

New Delhi, August 11, 2012: The Supreme Court has recently allowed Exxon Valdez, which had caused one of the worst US oil spills in Alaska over two decades ago, to be dismantled in the country but required the owner to pay for disposal of any toxic materials found on the ship. The ship entered Indian waters in May this year to be broken down for valuable parts. This caused huge protests and even the apex court was moved to stop the ship from being dismantled in India without prior decontamination of hazardous wastes in the country of export.

Dispose toxic waste in and around Carbide plant in six months: SC

New Delhi, August 10, 2012: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Centre and Madhya Pradesh government to take steps within six months for safe disposal of the large quantity of toxic waste lying in and around the defunct Union Carbide plant, from which leak of poisonous gas in December 1984 had resulted in death of thousands and maiming of a lakh people.
