India lays down e-waste management rules

Increasing incidents of malpractice involving electronic dumping in the absence of regulation have triggered the need for e-waste rules, which first saw an initial draft in 2010. After much deliberation and some further amendments, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has come out with some new proposals that will go into effect in May 2012.

Chennai sits on a growing e-waste pile

Chennai, January 29, 2012: A Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) recommendation to set up e-waste collection centres is gathering dust. Corporation sources say many people refuse to leave their products for free at such centres. The city annually generates more than 30,000 tonnes of e-waste, and it is growing. By 2030, this is projected to touch two lakh tonnes.

IIP growth comes gift-wrapped in plastic

New Delhi, January 22, 2012: It may be an environmental nuisance, but when stacked up by the ministry of statistics on the IIP list, the plastic bag becomes a driving factor for industrial growth. The growth in polythene bags emerged a contributory factor in the positive November IIP (industrial production index) numbers.

IIP numbers saw 5.9 per cent growth in November.
