Swacch Bharat Mission
The Indian government launched Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) on 2nd October 2014 with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Clean India in an endeavor to transform India into a totally sanitized and a healthy country. Some of the significant objectives of the Mission are elimination of open defecation, scientific processing/disposal/reuse/recycle of Municipal Solid Waste, bring about a behavioural change in people regarding healthy sanitation practices, among others. The Mission will be implemented over a period of five years and will extend assistance to all the statutory towns/cities as per 2011 census. It has been divided into two sub categories - gramin (rural) and urban.
Almost five months have passed since the Mission was formally launched with extreme euphoria, with all the government departments taking pledges and making plans for cleanliness. Amidst this euphoria, Toxics Link public lecture will try to provide deeper understanding among the audience about the Mission's objectives, implementation issues and challenges, and implications on environment.
