Interventions

Toxics Link’s Information and Communication programme is focused on communicating the research and interventions done by the organisation on the issue of toxics and environment to create mass awareness and improve the responsibility of stakeholders, regulators and individuals for a toxics-free earth.

As much of the toxics-related information available is fragmented and not easily available to citizenry at large, Toxics Link utilises an array of communication tools and knowledge products, such as publications, newsletters, updates, factsheets, films and public lectures. The programme also maintains a Resource Centre, which is a fully automated in-house library consisting of books, articles, magazines, periodicals, journals and films on environment, health, toxicity and other related issues for its members.

All national and regional interventions by Toxics Link have received optimal media coverage. Various international, national and vernacular media houses, both electronic and print, have been regularly covering the events of the organisation, which reflects its excellent relationship with the media.

Under the programme, regular press conferences and press releases are done highlighting the works, research and major reports of Toxics Link.

Public lectures: Environment and Health Public Lectures series are held quarterly in collaboration with India International Centre, New Delhi. They provide a platform to initiate a public debate and generate awareness on topical developmental and environmental issues. Eminent personalities from academia, NGO, media, government, documentary film makers, activists, etc. participate in these public lectures.

Films:In an attempt to increase awareness on e-waste, toxics-free healthcare, hazardous wastes, and pesticides, Toxics Link has produced various films. These films serve as an effective advocacy tool and are widely used at workshops, events, seminars, school awareness programmes, hospitals and lectures.

Film festivals:Toxics Link, in collaboration with India International Centre, has been organising ‘Quotes from the Earth’, an environmental film festival biennially since 2004. It started with screening of 18 films in 2004 to over 25 films in 2012. The films are of various genres and throw light essentially on wildlife, water, survival, conservation, earth and sustainability. The documentaries shown highlight the ecological debates and have offered a visual understanding of some of these daunting challenges.

"Quotes from the Earth" has also travelled to various cities such as, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hubli over the years. The festival goes beyond viewing films. A panel discussion with eminent academicians, activists, media persons and filmmakers follow the film screenings.

Newsletters and factsheets: Toxics Link publishes ‘Toxics Dispatch’, a quarterly newsletter printed also in Hindi as ‘Toxics Khabar’. The dispatch includes articles, features, interviews of eminent personality, updates from different programmes and the information of the events organised by the organisation.

An e-newsletter ‘Toxics Alert’ is also circulated monthly to all the subscribers and uploaded on the website.

The programme also publishes factsheets from time to time, which provide comprehensive details of some specific issue.

Parliament Questions: The programme does a first-hand compilation of all the questions and answers on environmental issues raised in both the houses of Parliament. It receives regular queries on Parliament questions from researcher scholars, students and NGO professionals. Some of the question--answer sessions are proactively followed by contacting the concerned authorities in order to make them aware of the issue.

Website: The website is maintained and constantly updated based on inputs from various sources. The content on the website is managed regularly and has proved to be a major source of information on toxicity in India.
